FORGED FROM THE STARS Announcement & Cover Reveal

What is a perfect idea? FORGED FROM THE STARS is a perfect idea. A perfect collaboration, leading to a perfect title, a perfect tagline and a perfect cover. Inside, a perfect selection of galaxy-spanning epic science fiction featuring…not quite perfect heroines. They may have a few flaws here and there—flaws more than made up for with spirit, determination and a generous sprinkling of audaciousness. Damsels in distress, they are not.

FORGED FROM THE STARS is an upcoming collection featuring the first novels in three science fiction series: Ziva Payvan, Spectras Arise and Aurora Rising. STARSHINE, you’ve probably heard of. I'm thrilled to have it included alongside books by two amazing women who are blazing their own trails in the independent publishing world, Dakiti: Ziva Payvan Book One by EJ Fisch and Contract of Defiance: Spectras Arise Book One by Tammy Salyer, plus a groovy foreword from irreverent writer, reviewer and wordsmith S.E. Lehenbauer.

AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE FOR KINDLE ON FEBRUARY 15TH AT A SPECIAL RELEASE PRICE OF $0.99

SIDESPACE (Aurora Renegades Book One) will be released and in your hands on NOVEMBER 9, 2015. Otherwise known as one month from today.

As that date draws closer I'll have various fun promotions and the like to announce, including a Goodreads paperback giveaway, a string of teaser quotes, a "behind the scenes" blog post, sales on the Aurora Rising books and a Sidespace-themed makeover of the website and social media pages. To kick things off today, I'm excited to share the back-cover blurb for Sidespace.

Starshine (you remember it, right?) had a very good September - and since you all are on this ride together with me, I thought you might like to hear about it....

First off, tremendous thanks to S. E. Lehenbauer at Novel Commentary for her drop-dead fabulous review of Starshine. It's as if she knew tossing in all the Firefly references (including calling Alex a "damn shiny pilot") would have me shedding tears of joy even without saying it "might be the perfect set-in-space science fiction book."

The Art That Inspired The Worlds of Aurora Rising

We're going to be visiting a lot of new worlds in Aurora Renegades. While we're by no means leaving the planets back home in Aurora behind, now that Aurora Rising is complete I thought I'd share some of the spacescapes and futuristic art* that I drew on for inspiration in imagining the varied colonized worlds visited in Aurora Rising - for your enjoyment and as a 'thank you' to the fantastic artists who help fuel my imagination.

The links go to Deviant Art pages (you don't need an account to view the images on DA), where you can see the pieces in gorgeous high resolution and learn more about their creation. If you particularly enjoy a piece and are a DA member, show your appreciation by favoriting it, following the artist, or even leaving a comment.

Audio Deals Growing On Trees

October 25, 2026

It feels like they are, anyway.

I know most of you are ebook readers (and some of you are print readers), but all the industry know-it-alls insist that audiobooks are exploding like a fireworks stand in a lightning storm. More importantly, I always like to give the audio-curious among you opportunities to try out the format on the cheap or free. Today, I get to do that twice over!

First up, for the next week, the first five audiobooks in the Amaranthe universe - Starshine, Vertigo, Transcendence, Sidespace, and Dissonance - are on massive sale over at Chirp as part of their “The Best Series Sale in this World - and Beyond” promotion. Each of the titles are available for only $2.99, or you can get the bundle of all 5 for $14.95. That’s over sixty-eight hours of epic space opera, which works out to… * scribbles on a napkin * …22 cents per hour of listening pleasure. Now that is a bargain.

Check out the promotion here: chirpbooks.com/audiobook-bundles/13326

But maybe you’re not a Chirp person. Maybe you’re a Spotify person (most of the world is, right?). It just so happens that Spotify has gifted me 25 free redemption codes to hand out as I SEE FIT. * cue maniacal laughter * Well, I see fitt to hand them out to you guys! Hit “reply” and tell me what title you’d most like to listen to in audiobook on Spotify, and a free code is yours - provided you’re one of the first 25 people to smash that button, because once I’m out, I’m out. Here’s your full selection to choose from (or you can see all my audiobooks on Spotify HERE).

That’s all I’ve got for you today, but next time, I should have something juicy about Naked Singularity. Maybe a cover reveal for the holidays?

Words I've Never Typed Before

October 5, 2026

“The End.”

I've never typed those words at the bottom of the final chapter of a book before. Perhaps because in my head, the end of a given book wasn't really "the end" - not of the story of Amaranthe. But now...well, you guys know. Cue all the bittersweet tears and early-onset nostalgia….

But first, one more epic, thrilling, multiverse-altering adventure, and those 2 little words mean the Naked Singularity Zero Draft is done! It clocks in at just over 111K words; if I had to guess today, the finished book will probably be about as long as The Theory of Everything, but we'll see - I still have a lot of work to do.

What's a "Zero Draft"? Why isn't this a "First Draft"? A Zero Draft means I've written substantive words in every scene from my outline of the book. The problem, of course, is that writing all those scenes inevitably exposed scenes that I didn't realize I was going to need - so now I have to go back and identify and write those. Also, some of the scenes have words, but...barely, so I need to flesh them out a bit more before I can rightfully consider them a real draft. Once I do those things, it'll become a First Draft. Then the real fun begins!

Live in the Inland Northwest? Come see me at the Halloween X-SPO in Spokane this Saturday and Sunday. It’s a SFF-focused geek convention with all the merch, swag, art, cosplay and guests you expect from such celebrations, plus 200% more ghosts and goblins. I’ll have a table in the main hall all weekend - come by for signed paperbacks, conversation, or just a picture together.

It’s a busy couple of weeks for appearances. Last weekend, I got to do a lovely SFF event, “Spellbound Spokane,” at Page 42, an awesome used bookstore in Spokane. It was my first outdoors event, and the weather Friday was terrible, so I was worried it would be a miserable affair. But the sun came out strong for us Saturday morning, it was a beautiful day, and I got to met a wonderful group of regional authors and local readers.

Is the Naked Singularity cover scribbled out on the banner in the pic? YES, yes it is. The cover made the banner because I obviously didn't want to have to order a second banner in a few short months (and how awesome is my shiny new tension fabric banner?!). But this cover, guys. It is going to knock your socks off - it was instantly my favorite cover. Yes, out of all of them. When you see it, I want it to be in full-res, full-size, technicolor awesomeness, not some tiny thumbnail. Therefore, scribbles.

Belatedly - far too belatedly, I apologize - I have updated the Amaranthe apparel at my Zazzle store to reflect all the series in the Amaranthe universe. This graphic is available on a variety of t-shirt designs, hoodies and sweatshirts. You can check out these designs, plus mugs, stickers, keychains and art here: Zazzle store.

It’s been a busy, beautiful, incredibly fun summer here. But now the weather is about to turn chilly, gray and damp - time to hibernate and make this most epic of finales everything Alex, Caleb, Nika - and most of all you - deserve.

Until next time.

P.S.: Are you a Halloween fan? Do you decorate your front yard with skeletons, ghouls and spiders, and craft elaborate costumes? Or do you forget it’s even a thing? I confess I haven’t been much of a Halloween person since I was a kid, but I am blown away by the creativity of people who are. Hit “reply” and let me know how you celebrate the spooky season.

The Theory of Everything Audiobook Is Here

August 28, 2026

Audiobook lovers, the wait is over! The Theory of Everything audiobook is now available for you to sink your ears into.

First, full disclosure: it is not available on Audible; they are having undisclosed technical issues, so it might be several more weeks before it’s released there. But it is available at virtually every other major retailers, including Apple, Spotify, Chirp, Kobo - and of course at my direct store, where I can offer you the best price (if you haven’t tried it yet, BookFunnel offers a lovely listening app that rivals the big retailers).

To ease the sting of Audible being stupid, I’m giving you an additional 25% off the audiobook at my store. Just enter the coupon code TTOE_AUDIO at checkout to get the TTOE audio for a mere $7.50. So what are you waiting for? All the ebook and print readers say you need to experience Alex’s most audacious stunt so far (and my friends, that is saying something).

Books Everywhere

August 8, 2026

You like books, right? Probably scifi and fantasy ones most of all? Well, I have books for you!

First, a quick Amaranthe update. I had to take a tiny, 10-day break from writing Naked Singularity to write a short story. I can’t tell you about it yet, but gosh is it simply lovely. Now I’ll again be neck-deep in the big finale by Monday. Also, Pyper is about 3/4 of the way finished with the Theory of Everything audiobook, so look for that soon.

Now, books! C. Gockel’s final book in the Convergence Trilogy - which we’ve been following here, and I know many of you are enjoying - is now available on Amazon and in Kindle Unlimited. You can get it HERE. And if you haven’t started the trilogy yet, grab Book One HERE.

The thrilling conclusion to Beasts in the Garden and Intelligent Design

The floating colony of Twilight was meant to be humanity’s future—engineered, orderly, and invincible. But its designers built a genetic monoculture destined to fail. Hana Morgenstern and John Miller fled before the collapse, seeking refuge among the North Polars, a breakaway society as devout as it is durable.

But even on the frozen side of Dawkins, danger lurks. Hana’s discovery of time gates offers both salvation and ruin. These portals can reconnect lost human colonies…or unleash extinction from across the stars.

As a deadly storm brews and old enemies close in, Hana, John, and their adopted wolf Haiiro must choose: die where they stand—or leap, once again, into the unknown.

They will wind up where no man has gone before.

They will not be welcomed.

Then there are more books, all of them free to download. The Fiction Giveaway Extravaganza 2 is featuring almost 50 terrific scifi, fantasy, horror and mystery novels (including many you probably haven’t seen before) for the rest of the month, so load up that ereader. See all the books HERE.

Featuring free books is an excellent opportunity for me to remind you of the many ways you can get my books on the cheap. (Don’t get me wrong - I love, love, love everyone who is happy to support me by buying my books at the retail price. Thanks to you, I get to keep writing yet more books. But I understand; sometimes finances get tight, and though books feel essential to us, they aren’t as essential as pesky necessities like food and clothing.

All of my books are available in ebook and audiobook to libraries through the big library distributors, Overdrive and Hoopla, and library apps like Libby. If they don’t show up for you, ask your library to order them. Then there are the subscription services: my ebooks and audiobooks are available in Kobo Plus (check it out HERE) and Everand (formerly Scribd), and my audiobooks are on Spotify. And of course, if you’re looking to devour the Amaranthe universe and just want to save a bit of money, the Omnibus Collections offer a significant discount over the individual novels.

So what are you reading these days? I just finished up Peter F. Hamilton’s Exodus duology (can’t wait for the game next year), and am diving into Ken MacLeod’s The Fall Revolution series. Hit ‘reply’ and let me know. :)

Now, allow me to gush about my recent book reads. If you follow me on social media or subscribe to my Supermassive Black Holes blog, you’ve already heard me go on and on about Hyperion by Dan Simmons. You can read all my thoughts on it (and why I’d never read it until now) here: SMBH: Hyperion. TL;DR: it’s an incredible book. A seminal book worthy of all the accolades it’s received over the years. It’s literary in a way that science fiction usually is not, but still a thoroughly scifi tale on every page. Since I made that post, I’ve read the remaining 3 books in the Hyperion Cantos series, and I can recommend them as well; they do not rise to the soaring heights of the first book, but they’re excellent scifi novels.

And now I have a set of some of the most beautiful books I’ve ever laid eyes upon: The Broken Binding special edition hardcovers of the Hyperion Cantos. Pictures cannot convey how gorgeous these books are.

My #1 career goal isn't to see my books on the screen in movies or TV series - it's to have a full-out, every flourish Broken Binding edition of the Aurora Rising novels. Or, you know, all of them. ;)

The Theory of Everything Will Be in Your Hands On....

April 12, 2026

** JUNE 12, 2026 ** in ebook, paperback and hardback (audio on the way).

For 23 books, the Amaranthe saga has swept you across multiverses: from Alex's dimension-defying explorations and Caleb’s world-saving heroics, to Nika's kyoseil-fueled rebellions and Miriam's strategic machinations. You've witnessed sentient planets awaken, AI-human symbioses redefine life, and unlikely alliances overcome impossible odds. But now an ancient enemy, the Dzhvar, have returned, and the universe’s days are numbered - unless Alex can find a way to save it. Her quest to find the key that unlocks everything will take her farther than any mind was ever meant to venture—and beyond.

You can pre-order the ebook from your favorite retailer today, and it will be waiting for you in your ereader / app on the 26th. You can also preorder a signed paperback or the audiobook directly from me. And did I mention I love the cover? Because I LOVE the cover.

Kobo Plus is featuring both Starshine and Exin Ex Machina this month, as part of a big SFF promotion. What’s Kobo Plus, you ask? Well, it’s a sort of “Netflix for books.” Much like Kindle Unlimited (KU), except it’s cheaper for readers ($7.99 vs $11.99 in the US), it includes audiobooks as well as ebooks, it’s available in a bunch of countries, and it’s fairer to authors. How? Well, in order for a book to be in KU, Amazon requires it to be published exclusively on Amazon. Kobo Plus, however, has no such requirement. This means all my books and audiobooks are available in Kobo Plus - and so are offerings from a ton of talented authors.

Best of all? The first month’s free, so you can try it out and see if you like it.

Kobo has a great free reading app you can install on your phone, tablet or computer, just like Kindle (they also make extremely high-quality ereader devices, if you decide you’re all in on Kobo). So check out these featured scifi and fantasy ebooks and audiobooks on Kobo Plus today (just a small sampling of the many titles available). Click on a book that catches your fancy, and you’ll be prompted to start your free trial. Enjoy!

Feast Your Eyes on The Theory of Everything Cover

February 26, 2026

Update from my writer’s loft: I’m extremely happy with how THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING is coming together. The book is over 140K words long now; it might not quite match Liminal Space’s door-stopper status, but it’ll be close. I’ve finished the comprehensive, deep edit, and am now going back through it again for an extra layer of polish and shine - then it’s off for some formal editing.

I’m not quite ready to set the final release date yet, but from here, early June is looking enticing. I’ll keep you posted.

But today, I’m so excited, giddy even, to share the final cover with you, along with the blurb for the book! I wish I could tell you how perfect this cover is, but I’m afraid you’re going to have to read the book to truly understand. It evokes all sorts of gooey, mushy feelings every time I gaze upon it. I’m honestly not certain how I’m going to top this one for the final book….

SEE THE COVER

To save the universe, Alex Solovy will risk everything to discover why it falls.

A war has raged for endless aeons. Our greatest champions have fought it again and again in a tireless endeavor to save not merely innumerable lives, but existence itself.

It is a war that has never been won. But there has never been a timeline like this one before.

When the Dzhvar descend in force, Corradeo Praesidis rises as Concord’s resurgent champion. Wielding primordial diati like living fire, he shields billions from the corrosive destruction the Dzhvar inflict. But he is just one man, and the enemy grows more numerous every day, so Kennedy Rossi races to forge dimensional sanctuaries for the worlds beyond his reach, each one carved out at a terrible price.

Nika Kirumase stands at the precipice of her million-year destiny, and the crushing weight of it threatens to shatter even her iron will. Mesme—her past, her mirror, her unyielding guide—must help her become what no other incarnation has: a bridge that can end the war instead of a martyr condemned to fight it anew.

But a bridge to what? Kyoseil binds Alex Solovy to the scar burned into the firmament when the Dzhvar returned. It floods her with visions of countless defeats, yet she hunts for the single path to victory. Her quest to find the key that unlocks everything will take her farther than any mind was ever meant to venture—and beyond.

In the explosive heart of the Amaranthe saga’s final trilogy, as the manifold fractures and primordial titans clash across the stars, relationships, courage and the threads of sanity strain and splinter beneath cosmic forces older than time.

This is the end of days. Mesme has saved the people who will save the universe, if it can be saved, for this moment, and they must hold nothing back.

More news! Are you going to be attending Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle next weekend? Well, I am. I’ll have a booth in the Writer’s Block, which is on Level 2 of the Summit Building; it’s a great setup, with all the books in one place. If you're going to be there, come see me! You don't need to buy a paperback, promise - just stop by and say hello. I’d love to meet you. BUT, since Seattle is within driving distance for me, I can take special requests. I’ll have plenty of copies of Aurora Rising, Asterion Noir, Medusa Falling and The Thief with me, but if there’s a specific book you’d like to get signed, reply and let me know, and I’ll bring a copy along.

Finally, I want to share something really cool with you. One of my most awesome readers, Olga Savinkina-Titova, is a native Russian speaker, and she translated the very first short story in the Amaranthe universe, Restless I, into Russian, simply as a gift to me - and to you. So if you happen to speak Russian, go give it a read! Alex would be so psyched over this. You can learn more about Olga here, and her proofreader, Yulia Afonasyeva, here.

Black Friday Sale, Plus "The Thief" Gets a Gold Star

November 23, 2025

I am so excited to share that THE THIEF has won the Indie Author Project 2025 Award for Best SciFi Book! The Thief and Eren have gotten so much love, and I could not be happier about it.

What’s the Indie Author Project? It’s a national library program (Canada, too) dedicated to connecting local libraries and the readers that use them with great indie-published books. In addition to the Awards program, they sponsor Indie Author Day every year, which is 2 weeks of events at libraries across North America. You can learn more about the program and see all the award winners here: Indie Author Project 2025 Awards

So what all did The Thief win? There was an online awards ceremony, and I got to record a little acceptance video, which was too cool. Should you want to see it, the video is available here: Awards Ceremony (I’m at 15:22). The book will be featured in the “Best of Books” issue of Library Journal, an actual physically printed magazine. I’ll have an interview with IAP up in a few weeks as well. Oh, and I won some money! Neat.

I want to shout out to my local libraries for all their support of indie authors: Coeur d'Alene Public Library and the Community Library Network (the CDA suburbs network of libraries). I’m excited to be doing a local author event at the Hayden library (part of CLN) this weekend, in fact. Libraries are awesome, guys, and they are doing great work to keep books in people's lives, no matter a person's means. If you haven't hooked up with your local library in a while, give them a visit.

Writing updates! THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING is coming along quite nicely, while shaping up to be another beast of a book. I’ve just about finished up the cover for it, and I am head-over-heels in love with it - I can’t wait to share it with you. How are you enjoying Liminal Space? Plus a quick question for you.

October 5, 2025

Technically a second question, I suppose - we’ll get there in a second. If you haven’t grabbed LIMINAL SPACE yet, you can find it at your favorite retailer in ebook and print now. GET LIMINAL SPACE

If you’ve picked it up already, I certainly hope you are enjoying it! Let me know. What are readers saying so far?

“How I'm still invested after 23 books, I have no idea. But somehow, the stakes are higher than ever, the adventure is exciting, the plot threads feel new, and the bad guys are ultra bad. I couldn't be more pleased with this book!”
“Wow - what a start to the final arc in this epic tale. I wasn’t ready for the book to end and can’t wait for the next one.”
“I had a lot of fun with the smaller, more contained stories in the Cosmic Shores novels, but reading this book felt like being reunited with a bunch of old friends. I hadn’t realized how much I missed the full Amaranthe cast!”

I’m exited to share the newest Kickstarter from my friend and stellar scifi writer C. Gockel. NOBLE SAVAGES is the finale in the Convergence cycle (part of her epic Archangel Project universe). I know I shared the first book in the story, Beasts in the Garden, with you all a while back - but if you missed it then, no worries. You can pick up the first and second books as part of the new Kickstarter. CHECK OUT THE NOBLE SAVAGES KICKSTARTER

And on that thought, my other question: have you ever bought a book (ebook or physical) through Kickstarter? I’ve never gone the Kickstarter route, because, hey, you guys are all already here. But after Shadows & Light, I’m going to be launching an entirely new universe, and it might be time to mix things up a bit. For now, I’m simply curious. If you have more thoughts than simply ‘yes’ or ‘no,’ comment and let me know how you found the experience.

Who Wants a Cover Reveal?

June 26, 2025

Update from my writer’s loft: work on LIMINAL SPACE is going fabulously. It’s over 145K words now (putting it on track to be the third-longest book in the series); I’ve finished the comprehensive, deep edit, and am now going back through it again for an extra layer of polish and shine - then it’s off for some formal editing.

I’m not quite ready to set the final release date yet, but from here, mid-to-late September or early October is looking entirely doable. I’ll keep you posted.

But today, I’m so excited to share the final cover with you! Quite mysterious and ethereal, isn’t it? As I always try to do, this art conveys the the theme and tone of the book, as well as the meaning of the title (or rather meanings, plural - you know how I love to sneak in more than one connotation). Let the speculation begin!

* I’m excited to share that Kobo is featuring THE THIEF and THE UNIVERSE WITHIN as part of its Kobo Plus SciFi & Fantasy Feature this month.

What’s Kobo Plus, you ask? Well, it’s a sort of “Netflix for books.” Much like Kindle Unlimited (KU), except it’s cheaper for readers ($7.99 for ebooks vs $11.99 in the US), it includes audiobooks as well as ebooks, it’s available in a bunch of countries, and it’s fairer to authors. How? Well, in order for a book to be in KU, Amazon requires it to be published exclusively on Amazon and no other retailers (this is why my books aren’t in KU). Kobo Plus, however, has no such requirement. This means all my books and audiobooks are available in Kobo Plus - and so are offerings from a ton of talented authors.

Best of all? The first month’s free, so you can try it out and see if you like it. Kobo has a great free reading app you can install on your phone, tablet or computer, just like Kindle. So check out these featured scifi and fantasy ebooks and audiobooks on Kobo Plus today (just a small samplling of the many titles available). Click on a book that catches your fancy, and you’ll be prompted to start your free trial. Enjoy!

Get your Cosmic Shores Collection - and come see me at Lilac City in Spokane

June 2, 2025

Just because the Cosmic Shores novels all tell their own stories, doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to be wrapped up in a bundle for their own special collection! Though Medusa Falling, The Thief, and The Universe Within each feature different protagonists, they all take place in the same one-month period, offering a glimpse at a few of the many wild and dangerous adventures our friends in Amaranthe get up to in their free time.

Download AMARANTHE VII: COSMIC SHORES from your favorite retailer (including direct from me) at a 45% discount over buying the books individually. GET THE BOOK

* Do you live in the Pacific Northwest? Come see me at Lilac City Comicon in Spokane this weekend! It runs June 6-7 and features over 300 exhibitors, cosplay contests, panels, gaming and more.

I'll have a booth on the main exhibitor floor both days. Come by to grab signed paperbacks, or just to say hi and take a pic together.

If you're planning to be there, shoot me a message and let me know! You can learn more and get tickets here: https://www.lilaccitycon.com/

A Liminal Space Update, Plus The Universe Within Audiobook Is Here

May 14, 2025

Well, LIMINAL SPACE already has over 100K words, and I’m not even done with the “zero draft” yet! The story has come together quickly and smoothly. This book is going to be so epic - everything you expect to see from the sequel to the Riven Worlds saga. It also picks up those relationship threads and story twists from the Cosmic Shores novels and takes them in exciting directions. I want to tell you everything - but I should probably wait and let the book do that, right?

Oh, what’s a “zero draft”? Why not a first draft? Well, the first draft comes later. When the zero draft is done, I’ve put words on the page for every scene in my outline. But I KNOW that when I read back through what I’ve written, I’m going to discover I have additional scenes to write. And I definitely know (because of all the words I didn’t write) that many of the scenes are stubs: they capture the major action of the scene, but they lack setting and context, which means many more words to write. Therefore, “zero draft.”

More news soon.

Quick question: do I have any fluent German speakers here? I’d love a brief consultation on a project - it shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes of your time. If you’re interested, hit ‘reply’ or email me at gs@gsjennsen.com.

Also, just to let everyone know: the website has gotten a lovely glow-up. The most important feature of the redesign is that it now looks 1000% better on mobile. It should be easier to find whatever book and format you’re looking for. The main page and series pages are much cleaner and more streamlined, too. And if you’re someone who keeps tabs on the WIP word count meter, you can now find it on the relevant book page (currently, Liminal Space).

THE UNIVERSE WITHIN audiobook is here! Who’s ready to immerse themselves in the dulcet vocal stylings of Pyper Down as you join Alex and Caleb on a fascinating adventure - and meet their new Elakri friends? By the way, before you start The Universe Within, give the prequel short story, EXTINGUISHING THE STARS, a listen. It adds so much depth and emotion to the novel. You can get it for FREE in my audiobook store or for pennies at the retailers.

The most affordable option for THE UNIVERSE WITHIN audiobook is at my audiobook store (if you haven’t tried it yet, BookFunnel offers a lovely listening app that rivals the big retailers), but it’s also available at Audible, Apple, Chirp, Spotify and more retailers. For All The Marbles

March 28, 2025

From the moment you turned the final page on Duality, you knew this battle was coming. And when you turned the final page on The Universe Within, you learned it was coming soon.

This series has, from the beginning, been about saving the universe from destruction at the hands of the Dzhvar. About a tireless endeavor by Mesme to save not merely innumerable lives but existence itself. (Though you can be forgiven for not realizing any of this when you cracked open a little book called Starshine. I did hide the ball for a while).

As a brief aside: if I could change one thing about Starshine, it would be to put Mesme on the page somewhere. We learn in Vertigo how Mesme was watching all along, but I wish I’d found a way to squeeze them into a scene somehow. Because this is Mesme’s story, at least as much as it is Alex and Caleb’s.

Anyway, where was I? Ah, yes, the Dzhvar. Specifically, the Dzhvar trilogy—or as I like to call it, Shadows & Light.
